PEACE.
Peace brings peace-loving people together on Dam Square in Amsterdam every last Sunday of the month. The demonstration for peace is organised by Petra. Today is March 31 and, at the same time, Easter Sunday. The advantage is that many people are free the next day.
Stronger together
The setup is bigger this time. Normally the peace march goes through the heart of Amsterdam. This time the march goes to the Museumplein, where there’s also a peace demonstration there.
The weather is cloudy in the morning. Towards Dam Square, it brightens and the sun breaks through. Many participants wear white clothing. This makes the group on Dam Square easy to see from afar.
Entrance
The entrance starts at Dam Square from noon to 1:30 p.m. with a speaker program and music. In front of Petra’s yellow bus, the stage is set up with microphones and instruments. The regular music group with Rico van Potkaars sings critical songs. Speakers include Kees van der Pijl, Ab Gietelink and Platform for Peace and Solidarity. A Russian soprano sings a song with the arcordeon. She also talks about her personal wartime suffering.
Hugs
In the crowd is the Blackbox’s camera crew, streaming the entire peace event live. Among the people are many acquaintances. Max is there too, as he goes to almost every demo in Holland when he can. Time for hugs, as we have given many over the past 3 years. Reunion does good. Reunion seals the connection and strength to stand together for another world, where peace and universal love is celebrated.
Police
Every time I see police uniforms, authomaticly I think of danger, due to the systematic police brutality I’ve seen. It’s still in the back of my mind. For the large turnout of participants today, the deployment of police and security officials is minimal. They are going to facilitate the procession, as they should.
At 1:30 p.m. follows the starting signal for the White and Peace Flag March with drums to Museum Square. As we leave an officer asks an estimate of the number of people in the march. Definitely over 500 I say laughing. From the Rokin, halfway through and the procession there’s no beginning or the end of the march to be seen. With that, the low estimate can be adjusted to between 1,500 and 2,000 people.
Amsterdam
In the busy city center, you can hear many different languages spoken by the tourists. The long procession of partly white-clad people, white and blue flags with peace doves attracts attention. Some people ask if peace refers to a particular war. “No, peace in the broadest sense, including peace within oneself. It begins in our hearts”, I answer.
At 2 p.m. we’re at the Museum Square. There stands the group of people from George van Houts’ peace demonstration. With the gathering, there’re around 3,000 people in the square. It is a feast of recognition. Sander Compagner and Ad Nuis of ‘de Andere Krant’ (the Other Newspaper) are among the people,as well as Peter Toonen. By now it’s so warm. The thick coat can be tied around the waist and even more white clothing can be seen.
Silence
At 2:30 p.m. there is a long silence. After some communication, this succeeds, making the energy of togetherness palpable. The silence concludes with applause.
Assange
Despite the call not to express certain critical texts, there’re still people with texts. I myself am wearing Lady Hemp’s T-shirt with a message for the hemp plant. The message for Assange can also be seen on T-shirts or even knitted on a hat and dog coat.
The march gathers sight again at 3 p.m. for the march back to Dam Square. In front the banner, followed by the drummers. Behind them walk the many participants. The sun is still shining.
Once again, there’s a lot of sightseeing from day trippers and tourists in the streets, but also in the streetcars and from the tour boats sailing through the Amsterdam canals. Making the peacesign with the fingers let evertyone participate in the energy of peace.
The Dam
Back at Dam Square at 3:45 p.m. Hugo Gietelink gives instructions with the megaphone for people to form a living heart. He even makes it a beating heart by making everyone jump up and down. Then the focus is back on the stage, where Petra announces a singing group from Korea. The group of 2 men and 4 women from World Anti Imperialistic Platform from Korea sing songs in their own language. When they sing the song from Bella Ciao, people can join in.
Around 4:30 p.m. it begins to rain. What a great day, what a beautiful reunion of peace-loving people. Hopefully people will continue to speak out for peace in love every day and join every last Sunday of the month on Dam Square in Amsterdam.

VREDE
De vrede brengt vredelievende mensen bijeen op de Dam in Amsterdam elke laatste zondag van de maand. De demonstratie voor de vrede is georganiseerd ddor Petra. Vandaag is dat 31 maart en tegelijkertijd eerste Paasdag. Een voordeel is dat veel mensen de volgende dag vrij zijn.
Samen sterker
De opzet is dit keer groter. Normaal gaat de vredesmars door hartje Amsterdam. Dit keer gaat de mars naar het Museumplein. Daar is ook een vredesdemonstratie.
Het weer is bewolkt in de ochtend. Bij de Dam wordt het lichter en breekt de zon door. Aan de oproep om witte kleding te dragen hebben veel deelnemers gehoor gegeven. Daarmee is de groep op de Dam vanuit de verte goed te zien.
Entree
De entree start op de Dam van 12.00 uur tot 13.30 uur met een sprekersprogramma en muziek. Voor de gele bus van Petra staat het podium opgesteld met microfoons en instrumenten. De vaste muziek groep met Rico van Potkaars zingt kritische liederen. Sprekers zijn onder andere Kees van der Pijl, Ab Gietelink en Platform voor Vrede en Solidariteit. Een Russiche sopraan zingt een lied met de arcordeon. Ze vertelt ook over haar persoonlijk oorlogsleed.
Knuffels
Tussen het publiek loopt de cameraploeg van Blackbox, die de hele mars life streamt. Onder de vele deelnemers zijn veel bekenden. Max is er ook bij, zoals hij naar bijna elke demo in Nederland gaat als het kan. Tijd voor knuffels, zoals we er al veel hebben gegeven in de afgelopen 3 jaar. Weerzien doet goed. Weerzien bezegeld de verbinding en de kracht om samen te staan voor een andere wereld, waar vrede en universele liefde wordt gevierd.
Politie
Bij het zien van politie uniformen denk ik automatisch aan het systematisch politiegeweld van de afgelopen jaren. Maar voor deze grote opkomst aan deelnemers vandaag is de inzet van politie en veiligheidsambtenaren minimaal. Ze gaan de stoet te faciliteren, zoals het hoort.
Om 13.30 uur volgt het startsein voor de Witte en Vredesvlaggenmars met drums naar Museumplein. Als we vertrekken vraagt een agent een schatting van het aantal mensen in de mars. Zeker boven de 500 zeg ik lachend. Vanaf het Rokin is halverwege de stoet het begin en het einde niet te meer zien. Daarmee kan de lage schatting worden bijgesteld naar tussen de 1500 en 2000 mensen.
Amsterdam
In de drukke binnenstad hoor je veel verschillende talen, die de toeristen spreken. De lange stoet met deels wit geklede mensen, witte en blauwe vlaggen met vredesduiven trekt aandacht. Sommige mensen vragen of de vrede betrekking heeft op een bepaalde oorlog. “Nee, vrede in de breedste zin, ook vrede in jezelf. Het begint in ons hart”, antwoord ik.
Om 14.00 uur zijn we op het Museumplein. Daar staat de groep mensen van de vredesdemonstratie van George van Houts. Met de samenvoeging staan er rond de 3000 mensen op het plein. Het is een feest van herkenning. Sander Compagner en Ad Nuis van de Andere Krant zijn onder de mensen, evenals Peter Toonen. Inmiddels is het zo warm dat de dikke jas om de middel kan worden geknoopt en nog meer witte kleding te zien is.
Stilte
Om 14.30 uur is er een lange stilte. Als dit lukt is de energie van saamhorigheid voelbaar. De stilte wordt afgesloten met een applaus.
Assange
Ondanks de oproep om geen uiting te geven aan bepaalde kritische teksten, zijn er toch mensen met teksten op borden of op kleding. Zelf draag ik het T-shirt van Lady Hemp met een boodschap voor de hennep plant. De boodschap voor Assange is ook te zien op T-shirts of zelfs gebreid op een muts en hondenmantel.
De mars verzamelt zicht weer om 15.00 voor de terug tocht naar de Dam. Voorop lopen mensen die de banner vasthouden. Daarachter lopen de trommelaars, gevolgd door duizenden deelnemers. De zon schijnt nog steeds.
Wederom volgt er veel bekijks van dagjesmensen en toeristen op straat, maar ook in de tram en vanuit de rondvaartboten die door de Amsterdamse grachten varen. Bij het opsteken van mijn hand met het vredesteken kunnen de mensen meedoen door ook twee vingers in V vorm op te steken. Vaak tovert het ook een lach op hun mond.
De Dam
Terug op de Dam om 15.45 uur. Hugo Gietelink geeft met de megafoon instructies om de groep mensen een levend hart te laten vormen. Hij maakt er zelfs een kloppend hart van door iedereen op en neer te laten springen. Daarna is de aandacht weer op het podium, waar Petra een zanggroep uit Korea aankondigd. De groep van 2 mannen en 4 vrouwen van World Anti Imperialistic Platform uit Korea zingen liederen in eigen taal. Als ze het nummer van Bella Ciao zingen kunnen de mensen mee doen.
Rond 16.30 uur begint het te regenen. Wat een fantastische dag, wat een mooi weerzien van vredelievende mensen. Hopelijk dat mensen zich blijven uitspreken voor vrede in liefde, elke dag en elke laatste zondag van de maand op de Dam in Amsterdam.
