Mothers Day
Sunday 9 May is Mother’s Day in the Netherlands. The sun is already shining like a gift. How nice is it that participants take their mother or child to walk the freedom march in Rotterdam. Super when owners also bring their dog.

The Netherlands in revolt
The organization ‘Netherlands in revolt’ has made agreements with the municipality of Rotterdam. The police and enforcers are there to facilitate. ‘The Netherlands in Revolt’ also has volunteers who support the participants before, during and after the march.

Bicycles
In front of and between the procession of people, cargo bikes ride along with music. Martin rides on the cargo bike with Wijnand in it. Wijnand plays fantastic live music. Together with Dennis they are the Ukes for Freedom. Other participants are welcome to play along while walking. Corstiaan drives at the back with a large music box. And then there are the police officers who ride bicycles.

Route
This time the route is different and shorter. The march starts on the Schouwburgplein. We pass the statue of ‘uninterrupted resistance’ on the Kruisplein. Continue to the Mauritstraat and at the Eendrachtsplein turn left onto the Nieuwe Binnenweg. At the beginning of the Nieuwe Binnenweg, the terraces are full of people. The terraces are open until 6pm and everyone seems to accept this.

Then two quiet roads are followed, the Mathernesserlaan and the ‘s Gravendijkwal, before entering the West Kruiskade. Rotterdam’s multicultural society converges on this street with tropical shops. After the West Kruiskade, the Kruisplein follows and the finish is at the Schouwburgplein.

The turnout is lower than last time. This could be due to Mother’s Day. But also because many people have already attended the march of the Police for Freedom the day before, on 8 May. At the Schouwburgplein, the participants celebrate the finish with song and dance.

 

 

Moederdag
Zondag 9 mei is het Moederdag in Nederland. De zon schijnt al als een geschenk. Hoe mooi is het dat deelnemers hun moeder of kind meenemen om de vrijheidsmars in Rotterdam te lopen. Super leuk als baasjes ook hun hond meenemen.

Nederland in opstand
De organisatie ‘Nederland in opstand’ heeft afspraken gemaakt met de gemeente Rotterdam. De politie en handhavers zijn er om te faciliteren. ‘Nederland in opstand’ heeft ook vrijwilligers die de deelnemers voor, tijdens en na de mars steunen.

Fietsen
Voor en tussen de stoet mensen rijden bakfietsen mee met muziek. Martin rijdt op de bakfiets, waar Wijnand is zit. Wijnand speelt fantastische livemuziek met Dennis. Andere deelnemers zijn welkom om tijdens het lopen mee te spelen. Corstiaan rijdt achteraan met een grote speeldoos. En dan zijn er de politieagenten die op de fiets rijden.

Route
Dit keer is de route anders en korter. De mars begint op het Schouwburgplein. We passeren het standbeeld van ‘ononderbroken verzet’ op het Kruisplein. Door naar de Mauritstraat en bij het Eendrachtsplein linksaf de Nieuwe Binnenweg op. Aan het begin van de Nieuwe Binnenweg zitten de terrassen vol met mensen. De terrassen zijn open tot 18.00 uur en iedereen lijkt dit te accepteren.

Daarna worden twee rustige wegen bewandeld, de Mathernesserlaan en de ‘s Gravendijkwal, alvorens de West Kruiskade op te gaan. De multiculturele samenleving van Rotterdam komt samen op deze straat met tropische winkels. Na de West Kruiskade volgt het Kruisplein en de finish is op het Schouwburgplein.

De opkomst is lager dan de vorige keer. Dit kan komen door Moederdag. Maar ook omdat veel mensen de dag ervoor, op 8 mei, al bij de mars van de Police for Freedom zijn geweest. Op het Schouwburgplein vieren de deelnemers de finish met zang en dans.
